RELICS FROM HMS BOUNTY. These items were brought back from Pitcairn Island by Kenneth M. Dodson (1907-1999), who served in the Pacific aboard the USS Pierce during World War II. Included in the present lot is Dodson's copy of Pitcairn Island by David Silverman (1967), with numerous marginal notes by Dodson detailing his visit and recording his impressions of the island and its inhabitants. In the margins of p 81, Dodson writes, "I visited Pitcairn Island 28 Aug 1942[.] pop was 206. I carried a 50 lb bag of sugar up this 'Hill of Difficulty,' a steep trail from boat landing to the level of Adamstown above." On p 100 he notes, "They gave me a piece of the Bounty's rudder," then on p 103, "Stone adze from pre Bounty inhabitants." The nail head is housed in an envelope on which Dodson has noted, "Copper Nail from The 'Bounty' given by David Young 5th from Midshipman Edward Young."
Dodson was the author of several naval adventure novels, including Away All Boats (1954), Stranger to the Shore (1956), and The China Pirates (1960), as well as the posthumously published The Poet and the Sailor (2007), documenting his unlikely friendship with Carl Sandburg.
