Боевая машина пехоты БМП-2Д (афганский вариант) разработана в 1981 году на базе серийной БМП-2. Выпускалась с 1982 г. От обычной БМП-2 отличается дополнительными бронелистами на бортах машины, которые установлены на некотором расстоянии от корпуса, стальными фальшбортами, которые закрывают ходовую, бронеплитой под местами механика-водителя и старшего стрелка, а также бронелистом в кормовой части башни. Боекомплект спаренного с пушкой пулемета увеличен до 3000 патронов. В итоге, масса машины выросла на 500 кг и она утратила возможность плавать.
